Nine people were killed in a plane crash, including Malawi’s vice president Saulos Chilima.

Ten people, including former first lady Shanil Dzimbiri and vice president Saulos Chilima, were on board a military plane.

Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine other passengers perished in an aircraft crash, according to a Tuesday announcement made by President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi, CNN said.

“We’ve successfully finished the search and rescue mission I directed to locate the missing aircraft carrying our vice president and nine other people. The aircraft has been located. And it has turned out to be a terrible tragedy, for which I am incredibly sorry and devastated,” Chakwera remarked.

Tuesday, rescuers had been searching a woodland shrouded in fog to the south of Mzuzu after authorities had discovered the final tower the plane had broadcast to before it vanished.

General Paul Valentino Phiri, the head of the army, had earlier stated that drones and helicopters had been used to support the search operation by other nations, including Malawi’s neighbors.

The group left Lilongwe on Monday just after 9:00 a.m. (0700 GMT) to go to Mzuzu, which is around 370 kilometers (230 miles) away, for the funeral of a former cabinet minister.

Shanil Dzimbiri, the former first lady of Malawi, was also present.

Chakwera claimed to have taken similar flights in the past on the same aircraft. He noted that just hours prior to the tragedy, the crew had successfully operated it.

“And yet, despite the track record of the aircraft and the experience of the crew, something terrible went wrong with that aircraft on its flight back to Lilongwe, sending it crashing down,” he stated.
