Malawi’s vice president’s plane is reported missing.

The government announced that a military plane carrying Vice President Saulos Chilima of Malawi has been reported missing after it was unable to land on Monday morning.

The government released a statement saying, “So far, all efforts by aviation authorities to make contact with the aircraft since it went off the radar have failed.”

Just after 9:00 a.m. local time (0700 GMT), Chilima, 51, and nine other people were on board the aircraft when it took off.

“Immediate search and rescue operation to locate the whereabouts of the aircraft” has been ordered by President Lazarus Chakwera for both national and regional forces, according to the statement.

Chakwera has subsequently canceled his trip to the Bahamas, where he was scheduled to make a working visit.

Chilima lost his position of authority in 2022 when he was detained and accused of graft in connection with a British-Malawian businessman’s bribery scheme.

Chilima appeared in court multiple times, and as a result, a Malawian court dropped the accusations last month.
