As the Russian shelling continues, the Netherlands takes the lead in providing Ukraine with air defense systems.

The Netherlands has taken the lead in providing Ukraine with much-needed air defense equipment while Russia continues to pound the country.

Leading the charge among several European nations to provide Ukraine with a single Patriot air defense system is the Netherlands.

The main air and missile defense system of the US Army is called the Patriot. The Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Missile Defense Project states that although the Patriot was once intended to counter aircraft, more recent iterations of the system are also capable of taking out ballistic and cruise missiles as well as loitering weapons (CSIS).

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has requested at least two Patriot air defence systems from Western partners

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asked Western allies, including the US, for at least two Patriot air defense systems.

The Netherlands will import the European Patriot system.

According to the DPA news agency, the Netherlands will take the initiative and search for parts and ammunition among the European nations before delivering it to Ukraine. It will not, however, supply the Patriot system itself.

According to a press release from the Netherlands’ Ministry of Defense, the nation “has identified which countries could offer additional Patriot parts and munitions” in order to provide Ukraine with a complete system.

The news release failed to specify which nations were involved in the endeavor spearheaded by the Netherlands.

Ukraine is still being attacked, naturally, according to a statement made by Dutch Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren in a separate statement. Airstrikes are still happening. Patriot system components will be supplied by us as we move forward, even though Patriot systems are hard to come by in NATO and Europe.

Zelenskyy has demanded greater freedom and weaponry when assaulting Russia.

Zelenskyy has recently pleaded with his Western allies to permit Ukraine to use their weapons to strike targets within Russia. Additionally, he has asked Western allies for stronger air defense systems.

Thus far, the United States and other Western allies have prohibited Ukraine from using their weaponry against targets within Russia.

According to VOA News, Zelenskyy stated in a statement on Monday that they must use “security and tangible coercion of Russia” to force Moscow to file a peace suit “by all means.”

Zelenskyy went on to say that pressure should be used to Ukraine’s allies as well as to Russia in order to “give us the opportunity to defend ourselves against Russia.”

Zelenskyy stated, “Even those allies who are hesitant to offer this or that counsel should realize that air defense is defense, not attack.”
