Ukraine accused Russia

Nearly 9,000 people have been evacuated from Ukraine in the week since Russian military launched an unexpected ground assault over the border

Ukraine accused Russia today of killing and detaining citizens in the northeastern Kharkiv border town of Vovchansk, where Russian forces launched a ground assault last week.

“Russian troops are taking civilians prisoner,” Interior Minister Igor Klymenko wrote on Telegram.

“According to intelligence reports, the Russian military, trying to gain a foothold in the city, did not allow local residents to evacuate: they began abducting people and driving them to basements.”

He added that there were “reports of the first shootings of civilians by the Russian military.”

“One of the residents of Vovchansk tried to escape on foot, refused to follow the commands of the invaders, and was killed by the Russians.”

Nearly 9,000 people have been evacuated from Ukraine in the week since the Russian military started an unexpected ground assault over the border. Russian military have already been charged with murdering residents in parts of Ukraine that they have taken over and controlled since their invasion in February 2022. Following month-long Russian occupation, the bodies of several dozen citizens, some with their hands tied, were discovered in Kyiv’s Bucha district in April 2022.
