Shaheen Shah Afridi’s Early Life:

Shaheen Shah Afridi was born on April 6, 2000, in Landi Kotal, a region in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. He belongs to the Zakhakhel Afridi tribe, a Pashtun community deeply rooted in cricket. Growing up in a family with seven brothers, he was the youngest, and his eldest brother, Riaz Afridi, played a solitary Test match for Pakistan in 2004, providing Shaheen with an early inspiration to pursue cricket as a career.

Cricket Journey:

Afridi’s cricketing journey began at the Tatara Ground in Landi Kotal, where he transitioned from playing tennis-ball cricket to hard-ball cricket. His breakthrough came when he impressed at the FATA Under-16 trials in 2015, earning a spot on the Under-16 tour of Australia later that year. His performance on this tour, where he contributed with four crucial wickets, signaled the arrival of a promising talent.

 

Afridi’s Domestic and Franchise Success:

Afridi’s talent didn’t go unnoticed as he made his debut for the Pakistan Under-19 cricket team in the 2016 Under-19 Asia Cup. His standout performance, taking three wickets for 27 runs in their opening match, demonstrated his potential as a future star.

Afridi’s journey took an international turn when he signed a contract with the Dhaka Dynamites in the Bangladesh Premier League in September 2017. Upon his return to Pakistan, he made a sensational first-class debut for Khan Research Laboratories in the 2017–18 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, taking an incredible 8 wickets for 39 runs in the second innings, a record for a Pakistani bowler on their first-class debut.

The international cricket community recognized Afridi’s potential when he was named in Pakistan’s squad for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. His impressive performance in the tournament led to his recognition as the rising star of the squad by the International Cricket Council.

 

 

Afridi made his debut for Lahore Qalandars in the 2018 Pakistan Super League (PSL) and left a lasting impression by taking five wickets for just four runs in a match against Multan Sultans. He continued to impress in various domestic and international T20 leagues, including the T20 Blast in England, where he recorded a historic hat-trick and four wickets in four balls.

International Stardom:

Afridi’s international career took off with his T20I debut for Pakistan in April 2018 against the West Indies. He subsequently made his ODI and Test debuts, solidifying his position as a versatile fast bowler. His remarkable performances in the 2019 Cricket World Cup, where he became the youngest bowler to take a five-wicket haul, further cemented his reputation.

In January 2022, Afridi was awarded the prestigious Cricketer of the Year title by the International Cricket Council for his impressive record of 78 wickets in 36 international matches in 2021.

Afridi’s Captaincy and Lahore Qalandars‘ Triumph

Afridi’s journey reached a new high when he was named the captain of Lahore Qalandars in December 2021. Under his leadership, Lahore Qalandars secured their first PSL title in the 2022 season and, in an unprecedented feat, successfully defended their title in 2023, making Afridi the youngest captain to win a T20 league.
