US soldier held in Russia on charges of making death threats on girlfriend
According to Russian independent media Mediazona, which cited the local prosecutor’s office, a U.S. military serviceman who was arrested in Russia on suspicion of stealing has also been charged with threatening to kill his fiancée. This information was revealed on Monday.
In the Far East of Russia, in Vladivostok, prosecutors announced that they had accepted the charge of an American citizen born in 1989. Although the American citizen’s name was withheld, Black’s details matched.
Following an argument between the two, the American “forcibly grabbed the girl by the neck, which she perceived as a real threat to her life,” according to the prosecutor’s statement. It was unclear whether or how the accused had reacted to the additional charge.
American staff sergeant Gordon Black, 34, was taken into custody by Vladivostok police on May 2 on charges of embezzling money from a Russian woman he was seeing.
In response to the theft accusations, he entered a guilty plea and is now assisting the investigation. Last Monday, a Russian court decided to hold him in jail until trial.
For a number of reasons, including “the potential for harassment and the singling out of U.S. citizens for detention by Russian government security officials” and “the arbitrary enforcement of the law,” the United States advises its nationals not to travel to Russia at all.
