Emotional campaigning has been overshadowed by political violence as Mexico prepares for the biggest election in its history. Numerous candidates have passed away in the run-up to the elections on June 2, which is a terrible reflection of the nation’s long-standing problems with political instability and organized crime.

 Mexican elections
The Mexico election is the most violent since 2018. At least 36 candidates seeking office have been killed since last June. Amid rampant political unrest, Mexicans, on Sunday, will navigate the future of their country

Since last June, at least 36 candidates for public office have died, according to the New York Times. When compared to past election cycles, this indicates a marked increase in political violence. For example, at least 32 candidates were killed in the 2021 election cycle, when voters cast ballots for almost 19,900 municipal positions.

This election cycle has seen more violent acts against candidates than any other, with 560 recorded by risk consultant Integralia. The previous high was 389 incidents during the previous presidential election. The human rights organization Data Civica has traced the deaths of at least 145 political figures this year as a result of organized crime.
