On Wednesday, Tory MP crossed the House of Commons floor to join the opposition Labour Party, humiliating British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak by leaving his party benches.

Dan Poulter, a doctor and Central Suffolk and North Ipswich member of Parliament for the Conservatives, announced at the end of April that he was switching his allegiance to Labour before standing down as a parliamentarian at the next general election because he can no longer defend the Tory government’s track record on the National Health Service (NHS).

Before the weekly Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs), Dover MP Natalie Elphicke resigned, claiming that Sunak’s Tories “have become a byword for incompetence and division.”

On Wednesday, a Tory MP crossed the House of Commons floor to join the opposition Labour Party, humiliating British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak by leaving his party benches.

In a resignation statement, Dover MP Natalie Elphicke stated that the Tories under Sunak “have become a byword for incompetence and division.”

“When I was elected in 2019, the Conservative Party held the centre ground in British politics. Elphicke, a fierce critic of the Labour Party until only a few days ago, stated in her resignation letter that the party was about building the future and taking advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead for our country.

“There have been numerous changes since then. The elected prime minister was deposed in a coup orchestrated by the unelected Rishi Sunak. Under Rishi Sunak, the Conservatives have become synonymous with incompetence and divisiveness. “The centre ground has been abandoned, and key pledges from the 2019 manifesto have been dropped,” she stated.

She went on to say that the Labour Party under Starmer has “changed out of all recognition” and that its ideas “can be trusted”.

Rishi Sunak failed promises:

“We need to move on from the broken promises of Rishi Sunak’s tired and chaotic government,” she said.

The dramatic moment of her crossing the floor of the House was followed by Starmer asking Sunak: “What is the point of this failed government staggering on” when the Tory MP on the front lines of the small boat migration crisis on the coast of Dover has openly attacked Sunak’s handling of a priority issue like illegal immigration.

“If he thinks his own MPs joining the Labour Party are wrong, if he thinks anyone believes any of the nonsense he spouts, why doesn’t he put it to the test and call a general election?” Starmer asked in a scathing attack during PMQs.

Sunak chose to dismiss the subject, accusing his opponent of holding “out of touch values” with the British people.

“He snipes from the sidelines, the Conservatives are building a better future,” Sunak stated.

According to reports, Labour will keep its current candidate in the newly created Dover and Deal constituency for the next general election later this year, while Elphicke will step down, with her future plans unknown.

“The inhabitants of Dover and Deal will be disillusioned after experiencing the consequences of illegal immigration. They used to have an MP who sat with the party trying to address this issue front on; now they have an MP in a party that has fought to oppose our proposals to combat illegal immigration 139 times,” a Conservative Party spokesperson said.
