Sweden’s domestic security agency accused Iran on Thursday of using the country’s well-established criminal networks as a cover to target Israeli or Jewish interests there.
The statements were made in a press conference by Daniel Stenling, the head of the SAPO agency’s counterespionage unit, in reaction to a series of events that occurred earlier in the year.
The Israeli Embassy in Stockholm was shut down in late January after what was later described as “a dangerous object” was found on the grounds of the diplomatic mission in an eastern part of the city. Swedish media referred to the object as a hand grenade.
In the end, the object was destroyed, but the embassy was left unvaccinated. The type of discovery was kept a secret by the authorities, and no one was taken into custody. The area was cordoned off on May 17 in the wake of shooting outside the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm. Nobody was placed under arrest.
The agency “can establish that criminal networks in Sweden are used as a proxy by Iran,” according to Stenling, but he offered no evidence or specifics to back up his assertion.
