In Dagestan, Russia, gunmen kill six police officers and a priest: officials

Georgia and Azerbaijan are bordered by the predominantly Muslim territory of Dagestan in Russia.

MOSCOW: In the Russian Caucasus province of Dagestan, gunmen assaulted a synagogue and churches on Sunday, killing six police officers and a priest, according to the national counterterrorism agency and police.

The attacks happened in Derbent, a coastal city, and Makhachkala, the main city in Dagestan.

The Investigative Committee of Russia declared that it has begun criminal investigations into “acts of terror”.

Georgia and Azerbaijan are neighboring regions of Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim area of Russia.

The National Antiterrorism Committee claimed in a statement to the news agency RIA Novosti that “armed attacks were carried out on two Orthodox churches, a synagogue, and a police check-point this evening in the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala.”

“As a result of the terrorist attacks, according to preliminary information, a priest from the Russian Orthodox Church and police officers were killed.”

The interior ministry of Daghazstan’s spokeswoman, Gayana Gariyeva, told RIA Novosti that the attacks had resulted in the deaths of six police officers and the injuries of another twelve.

According to Gariyeva, the press secretary for Dagestan’s interior ministry, a 66-year-old priest was murdered in Derbent.

“The Derbent synagogue is on fire,” posted on Telegram by Boruch Gorin, the chairman of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Russia’s public council.

“The fire has not been able to be put out. A security guard and a policeman are slain.”

“The Makhachkala synagogue has also been set on fire and burned down,” he continued. The priest’s throat was slashed during the assault on the Derbent Orthodox church.”

Sergei Melikov, the head of Dagestan, stated on Telegram that “unknown (attackers) attempted to destabilize the situation in society this evening in Derbent and Makhachkala.”

“They were confronted by Dagestani police officers.”
