Over 49 people die and 140 are missing after a boat capsizing near Yemen.

GENEVA: Following the capsize of their boat off the coast of Yemen, the UN migration agency revealed on Tuesday that over 49 migrants had died and 140 were missing.

260 migrants, including Ethiopians and Somalis, were on board the boat when it departed from Somalia, according to the International Organization of Migration (IOM). The sad event happened on Monday in the Shabwah province of Yemen, close to Alghareef Point. IOM reported that among the victims were 31 women and 6 children.

An IOM spokesperson, Mohammedali Abunajela, stated that “this tragedy highlights the urgent need for collective action to tackle migration challenges and ensure migrant safety.”

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has documented 1,860 cases of migrant fatalities and disappearances from East Africa and the Horn of Africa to Gulf nations since 2014. Drowning caused the deaths of almost 500 people.

The IOM claims that this migratory route is the world’s most hazardous.

“Often relying on smugglers to navigate the journey, migrants are frequently at an increased risk, including of human trafficking, during the perilous boat journey to Yemen’s shores,” stated the statement.

The United Nations estimates that 97,000 migrants crossed into Yemen from the Horn of Africa last year.
